I Feel Accepted!

Yesterday morning, I opened up this email.  And, even though I knew it was going to come sooner or later, I couldn't have been more excited when I read those words.  I HAVE BEEN ACCEPTED!!  To what?  Well, Grad School.  If everything goes OK, in August I'll be starting the journey to getting my Masters Degree in Elementary Admin.

The school where I teach was extremely lucky to be offered a cohort for Williams Woods University.  What that means is, as long as at least 8 other teachers get that same email I did, we'll actually have professors come to the school to do our program right there where I work.  No traveling, no missing work or leaving early for classes, no sitting in front of a computer every night of the week for online classes, everything will be done right there and I'll be working with people I know rather than complete strangers.

A few months ago, I had no real intentions of going back to school any time soon.  I mean, it's something I wanted to do eventually, but I thought I'd be teaching a few more years (and carving away at some of my already overwhelming amount of student loans) before I decided to go back.  But, it's an opportunity that isn't guaranteed will be available to me again.

The program will consist of having class one night a week for 3 hours.  We'll take one class at a time, about 6 weeks at a time.  After the first year, I'll have 15 hours of credit so that I can claim the Bachelors +15 pay raise in my salary scale.  Then, six months later, I'll graduate with my Masters and earn myself the big bucks that comes with having a Masters Degree.  (When I say "big bucks" that's speaking in teacher salary terms... so compared to what I was making, not compared to what people think of when they think of high salary terms.)

Even though it's only one class at a time and 3 hours of classwork a week, I know it will be A LOT more than that.  I know I'll have tons of work to do outside of class.  But, one class at a time will be manageable.  OK, so I won't be able to volunteer for all the extracurricular activities I often volunteer for, but I also know that it won't be the "lock myself away and never see the light of day" schooling I did while getting my Bachelors.  Back then, I was taking 15+ hours at a time.  This time around, I'll only be doing 1-3 hours college credit hours at a time.  MUCH more doable.

When presented with the opportunity, I had the option of doing Elementary Admin or Curriculum & Instruction.  The C&I Masters is a little less demanding, but when I thought about my future, I wanted to get a degree that would have some kind of license to go with it.  A C&I Masters would make me somewhat of a top candidate for jobs that require a specialization in Curriculum & Instruction, but that's about it.

Even though at this point in time I have no desire to ever become a principal, it doesn't mean that 15 years from now I won't want to give it a try.  A C&I Masters wouldn't give me that option.  And, I don't want to be a person that gets a masters degree and then 15 years from now has to go BACK to college to get ANOTHER degree just to pursue the opportunity for working as a principal.  Might as well get it done now, and then I'm set if the time ever comes that I decide to move out of a classroom.

For the life of me, I don't ever see that happening, but I've spoken to enough people in administration positions that tell me they ALL felt the same way when they first started teaching.  And, I'm not going to lie, I honestly think there will be a time a LONG way down the road when I think that I might be ready to tackle the challenge of running an entire school.  I've always been a person that wants to keep moving up and challenging myself.  Being a principal is a mighty endeavor, and one that I will probably want to consider when I've spent years and years in the classroom doing what I do and gaining the knowledge needed to even consider being a principal.

It's not only about the money or the opportunities that await years down the road, getting my Masters Degree is also about showing my kids that I continue to follow my dreams, no matter what obstacles stand in my way.  In a perfect world, I would have had my Bachelors when I was 22 and my Masters by the time I was 25.. but it's not a perfect world.  That doesn't mean I can't or couldn't achieve the goals I set for myself all those years ago, when I was young and the world was mine for the taking.

Finishing school, going to college, becoming a teacher, and even getting a Masters Degree was always on my "to-do" list.  From way back when college starting becoming a thing I was focusing on (my freshman year of high school) those were my plans.  Of course, back then, the plan was to go straight for getting my Masters in one swoop.  Staying in college until it was done. Having a M.A.T. (Masters of Arts in Teaching) was the way to go in order to get a teaching degree.  But, just because I took a few detours on the way doesn't mean that any of those plans had to be crossed off my list.

I may be 10 years older than I would have been had my life followed the course I mapped out, but I now know that situations don't always play out the way I want them to.  In fact, 99.9% of the time, situations don't play out the way I planned.  There's always a curveball being thrown my way.  But, my successes and achievements I've made in my life have been that much more important because I've seen the curveball coming, and swung with all my might until that ball makes it out of the park.  (Like that baseball analogy?  Nice, right?)

Anywho, I have ten more days of teaching summer school, then it's a nice, long, relaxing summer break to get myself physically and mentally prepared for the 18 months that will follow.  I'm sure I'll complain.  I'm sure I'll whine.  But, I'm sure I'll keep my eyes set on the prize and be cheering with excitement once it's all over.

Eighteen months is nothing.  I can do it.  I know I can.

Nothing Like a Bad Dream to Get Me Ready for the Day

Let me start out by saying, first of all, there's a big difference between bad dreams and nightmares.  Nightmares of those horrible dreams that are full of scary, crazy images that cause you to wake up screaming and crying.  Bad dreams are unpleasant dreams that leave you a little out of sorts with reality and the dream world...and you wake up wondering if that really happened or was it all in your head.

I haven't had either for as long as I can remember.  I usually have really great dreams or dreams I just don't remember.

Except, I had a bad dream last night.  A bad dream that verged on the boarder of nightmare, because I remember waking up at one point wanting to cry.  The worst part was that even though I woke up, and the dream should have been over, I went right back in to the dream as soon as I fell asleep again.

Why can't that happen when I'm having a really good dream?  You know, those dreams where you're sitting in a beautiful house, kids are playing wonderfully, and you get a visit from Channing Tatum.  And then the dream turns from good to great...and naughty.

OK, moving on.

It's probably because I enjoy those kinds of dreams way too much that caused me to have the dream I had last night.  When I like dreaming about dream boat guys - then I'm bound to get some kind of pay back.  Right?

Last night's dream was about Hubby.  Which isn't usually a bad thing.  But it was last night.

He decided to leave me.  Not just leave me, but informed me that he'd been seeing another woman for about a month.  My two worst nightmares rolled in to one.  Him leaving me.  Him cheating on me.  Except this wasn't a nightmare, it was a bad dream.

With most nightmares, the bad stuff happens and then you wake up and it's all over with.  Done.  No more worrying about it.  This dream, however, just wouldn't go away.  When Hubby let me know he had been seeing another woman... the rest of the dream was full of him tormenting me with the other woman, trying to figure out how I was going to move on without him, and trying to explain to the kids why daddy wasn't going to live with us anymore.  I remember actually waking up more than once with tears in my eyes... but I just couldn't shake what was going on in my head each time I closed my eyes.

Months of my bad dream life played out in the course of a few hours.

The dream was way more realistic than I would have liked.  Seriously, I would much rather dream of zombies or monsters or some other mythical creature.  I hate waking up in a state of wondering what the heck was just going on in my head... especially when the first thing I hear when I do finally wake up for good is the sound of the front door letting me know that Hubby is home early from work.

Now, I know that some people are going to have a field day with this. Let me state right now, I'm not asking for any form of "dream interpretation". There's not an ounce of me that feels like Hubby may actually be cheating on me, or ever would cheat on me. He's not like that. Trust me, I know. It was a bad dream. Period. Nothing more, nothing less. I'm simply sharing my experience.

I don't believe in subconscious messages that break through trying to tell me anything.  If I did, the message I would be taking from it is that I need to stop dreaming about Channing Tatum.  Hubby is the innocent party in all of it.  I probably dreamed about him doing that to me because I haven't been giving him enough attention, lately.

And there I go with trying to play in some mixed messages... which is exactly what I said I WOULDN'T do.

OK, that's enough.  I've mumbled and stumbled over this post long enough.  I'm ready to move on.  Shake it off.  And get on with my day.

Only 15 more school days left!

Saturday Morning Coffee Break

Dear Diary....

I've poured myself a cup of coffee, and my mind is racing with random stuff that I want to share...

You're not going to believe this, but I think Winter has finally arrived!!!  Only for the weekend, doesn't plan on staying long, but he's making a short trip.  He arrived last night when temps dropped quickly from a manageable 50 degrees down to 31 degrees in a matter of an hour.  Right now, it's 14 degrees outside.  14!!  The high for today is only 29.  Tomorrow won't be much warmer, and then on Monday?  Well, right now there's a 90% chance I'm going to finally get to see some snow!!  HALLELUJAH!!

I'm kinda hoping that this is going to turn in to a 3 day weekend for me.  We don't need a lot of snow around here to get school cancelled.  About 2" would easily do the trick.  Or an inch of snow and freezing rain.  That would get the job done, too.  The kids at school have been pretty wild the past couple of weeks, and I feel like they need this little break just as much as the teachers do.  The kids get a winter itch, that doesn't appear on the skin.  They crave the snow so that they can have an extra day off.  Once that happens, hopefully they'll calm down a bit - and the teachers can get some major work done.

But before the dreams of winter weather dance in my head, I'm off to my parent's house today to spend the night.  I've been looking forward to this all week.  My mom and I are heading off to a casino for the afternoon/evening for Mom & Daughter bingo.  That's not what it's called.  That's what I call it.  Just in case you were wondering.

I went to bingo with my mom and my grandparents a couple of Sundays ago.  It was so much fun.  And frustrating.  Three times, either my mom and I were set with our winning number in the screen to win $500 - and someone yelled bingo on the previous number.  Now, we've decided to go on a Saturday night when the prize money is a little higher - and it's just the two of us.  We have a rule that we split any winnings - so it doubles our chances of walking away with something.  Not that doubling our chances really helps - but we like it.  At the end of the day, it's not the winning that makes us go - it's the time we get to spend together.  It's a great activity for us to do, alone, and we have some great chat time.

Hubby and I have been talking about buying a couple of lottery cards today.  Have you seen the Powerball?  It's up to $325,000,000.  We don't play lotto hardly ever, but for some reason I get all silly when I see a number like that - and think that maybe this will be my one lucky break at winning.  Yes, it's stupid.  But you can't win the lottery unless you buy a ticket.

Once I think about buying a ticket, I start thinking of all the things I'd do with the money.  That's the part that jinxes me, I think.  When I start spending the money in my head.  A big, nice house.  A couple of new cars.  Help my family and Hubby's family out of debt and make sure they're comfortable for the rest of their lives.  A couple of nice, fat checks to my favorite charities.  I'd also still work - which blows Peanut's mind.  She thinks that if I won the lottery, I'd stay home all day and swim in the money.  That's absurd.  I didn't go to college and spend all that money to just win the lottery and never complete reaching my dreams.  Oh no.  I'd be a teacher.  I'd still go to work every day.  There's just no way I could sit at home and do nothing.  I'd go insane.  Even with all that money.

Speaking of which, I filled out an in-district transfer request at work this week.  That was kinda scary.  It's basically a form that goes to the district office that says I want another position next year, and then the superintendent reviews it and sends it to schools that will have openings next year.  It's the district's policy to try and fill job openings with in-district people before looking outside, but it's no guarantee.  It just means I've put my name out there with a pool of other people in the same situation I'm in.  The thought of having to leave the school I'm in is very scary, and upsetting.  The thought of getting a teaching position in any school, though, trumps that. I can't always have my cake and eat it.  That would be the scenario where I get a teaching job where I am now.  But, if I get an offer of a classroom teaching position in another school, I won't hesitate to take it.

Wow, I've really let my thoughts explode this morning - haven't I?  That was one great cup of coffee, but I've got to start thinking about getting stuff ready to go to my parent's.  Everyone have a wonderful weekend!!

Till next time. ;)

Dreams Can Come True...Right?

My body's trying to tell me something.

I can just feel it.

It's getting to the point that I'm not only constantly thinking about losing weight while I'm conscious...but my subconscious is now having a go.

I had the weirdest, coolest dream this morning.

I was at school... but the school was on in a really high hill.  It was surrounded by trees, grass, trails, and the most beautiful views.  I was so enthralled by the beauty outside, I decided to move my entire classroom out there.

Kids were reading in trees, laying in the grass, and working together to discuss the different plants and leaves.  There were no bugs or flies or wasps or ticks. This had to be the case, or I would have never agreed to be outside doing what I was doing.

Then, a group of kids asked me to go on a hike.  And we went.  I was climbing hills, jogging down rocky trails...and the sweat was pouring off of me.  The kids were commenting on how hard I was working...and I was really pushing myself.  I was even climbing up sides of cliffs!!!

The dream was so cool, I didn't want to get out of bed this morning.  And I didn't...until 5:15.

I woke up feeling calm, rested, and at peace.

Then it dawned on me.  If I'm dreaming about exercising that hard....isn't my body really trying to tell me something?  I'm no dream interpreter...but I put 2 and 2 together, and most of the time...it equals 4.  If my body is craving exercise....could it be trying to talk to me in my dreams?

I keep telling myself that I'm so busy during the week, that I just don't have the time to get out for a run.  That's partly true.  Most nights, I don't get home until after 5..and then dinner's done...and then I have some work to do...and then it's dark.

That doesn't account for weekends, though.  Even on the busiest of weekends - I control that schedule.  I have the say on where we go and what we do.  It's up to me to make my exercise happen.

I'm convinced that if I just did some exercise on the weekend - it would be so much better than what I'm doing now.  Which is absolutely nothing...if you missed that, somehow.

I keep telling myself the same thing... but I never seem to go through with it.  I'm not sure why.  The motivation to actually making the step of going out to run is what's killing me.  I just know that the minute I get out there, all will be right with the world - and I'll be so happy I did it.  So, why is it so hard to get there?

So, I've decided that my only goal this week is to go out for a run.  Just once.  That's it.

I will go out this weekend.  Maybe I'll just walk up the road.  Maybe I'll jog a little.  I just want to do something.  I just need to make the first step...because I know that once I remember how wonderful I feel after a good run - I won't need to psych myself up this much anymore.  I'm hoping so, anyway.

Oh, and the mini challenge for this week in Shrinvivor is to avoid all of the Halloween candy.  Well, I'm allowed two fun size pieces.  That's it.

I'm thinking that it would be easier for me to run a marathon than it's going to be to stick to this challenge.  But if I do?  Holy crap.  The heavens will open up and the angels will rejoice.  I'm sure of it.  Me avoiding Halloween candy is like....well, I can't really think of a cool comparison because now my mind is focused on the candy.  It's never happened before...ever...in my whole life.  Could this be the year that I make miracles happen?

Alright, time for me to head out into the gloom and cold of the morning.  It's 47 degrees right now.  It's only supposed to get up into the low 50s today...and rain all day.  It's the kind of day I'd much rather stay in bed and dream.

Oh well....everyone enjoy your Thursday!!

Till next time. ;)
